Here at Oaktrack our first lambing is officially underway with our first ewe giving birth yesterday and this year for the first time we are excited to announce that we are giving you the opportunity to get involved with the launch of a series of three 'hands on' lambing experience days. The days will be held on Monday 7th, Tuesday 8th and Sunday 13th March from 10am – 4pm and will give visitors a real taste of lambing life.
Tina, Oaktrack owner and smallholder, began keeping sheep over 20 years ago, when she and her husband Jim took on a handful of orphan lambs. Over time she started her own flock of pedigree Shetlands and Welsh mixed breeds and today has over 200 sheep which graze on sites in and around the local parish.
Tina will share the knowledge and expertise she has gained over the years from the basics of lambing to the equipment required.
Aimed at adults and children over 16, attendees will also get involved with the day to day running of the lambing shed, bedding up, feeding and of course keeping an eye out for lambs.
Lunch and refreshments will be included in the day which will be held at the smallholding in Charlton Down.
At a cost of only £60 per person this is a great opportunity for anyone who would like to experience practical 'hands on' lambing and learn about keeping sheep.
“We love to open our gates to visitors so they can see how we care for our animals, the work that is involved to raise them for food and future breeding as well as the importance of supporting local and British farmers.” Tina said.
She continues:
“We hope that this new initiative will reinforce this message and give people a once in a lifetime experience to see lambs being born."
The lambing experience days will very much be a 'hands on' experience so please dress appropriately and according to the weather conditions.
